Does a candidate who proclaims a strong religious faith make for a better president? It is common, almost expected, for candidates running for office in the United States to affirm their religious identity and to employ broad religious themes in support of their political agendas. Is this information relevant? Can they talk about their faith without being hypocritical? Can they say that their faith informs their policy positions and still legitimately lead a pluralistic country?

Brian Stiltner is Associate Professor of Religious Studies at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield Connecticut. His research interests focus on Catholic social ethics, the ethics of war and peace, and the role of religion in democratic public life. In 2007, Dr. Stiltner published “Faith and Force: A Christian Debate about War” with David L. Clough.

Filmmaker and writer Ron Austin speaks about his latest book, “Peregrino: A Pilgrim Journey Into Catholic Mexico,” which details his personal exploration of the Catholic culture of Mexico. He provides background about the history and uniqueness of Mexican Catholicism, particularly what he considers to be its “gifts” of beauty, ritual and family life. He also explores the bridges that exist and those that might be developed between Mexicans and Americans.

The Arcade Gallery Offers New Home for Marymount College Student Exhibits

The founding members of the San Pedro Arts and Academic Alliance (SPAAA) have offered The Arcade Gallery, at 479 W. Sixth Street, as a fixed venue for Marymount College students to showcase college work as students of Marymount’s Media Studies bachelor’s program. The Arcade Galley will host student work from a variety of artistic mediums. Gallery hours will be open to public.

The SPAAA is dedicated to connecting art venues, artists, arts education, business development and the community of San Pedro through collaborative efforts to enrich and strengthen the revitalization of San Pedro. The SPAAA’s founding members are art patrons Gary Larson, Peter Rothe and Beate Kirmse who established the organization in 2011 to address the effects of a local economic downturn and the desire to develop San Pedro as a cultural destination.

The SPAA group was inspired by a prior group of community members including Marylyn Ginsburg Klaus, Mary Gimenez-Caulder, Liz Schindler Johnson, Debra Zavala, Deborah Lewis who had formerly talked with Marymount College about bringing a campus to downtown San Pedro.

“Our mission is based on a profound faith that investment in the arts and arts education is an investment in the wellbeing of the larger community and, at the same time, creates an economic vibrancy in the community,” said Rothe, a tenant of The Arcade Building, where The Arcade Gallery is located.

Adding to SPAAA’s desire for an increased academic presence at The Arcade Gallery this group realized the timing was good for the college to further expand its reach into historic downtown San Pedro.

The college has made recent strides in its development in downtown San Pedro. Opened in fall 2012, Marymount College’s Waterfront Campus is located at 222 W. Sixth Street and scheduled for opening in August 2012, at 430 W. Sixth Street, will be the location for an expanded Media Studies program at the Marylyn and Chuck Center for the Arts.  Additionally, the college leases rehearsal and performance venues from the Warner Grand Theatre and the Grand Annex.

“With this new partnership with Marymount College, the San Pedro Arts and Academic Alliance group continues its commitment to the downtown San Pedro’s historic core,” said Larson.  “Marymount College and SPAAA are excellent partners as we share a vision, the creativity and flexibly in creating opportunities that will benefit both the college and the community with solutions that match the goal of a vibrant downtown San Pedro, said Larson.

“We are creating a college town in downtown San Pedro,“ said Laurie Wixted, Harbor area commercial real estate agent who is familiar with benefits SPAAA, The Arcade Gallery and what the college brings to San Pedro. “Together they are developing a vital environment that will benefit San Pedro and at the same time give Marymount an opportunity to meet their very noble goals to serve and educate,” continued Wixted.

Marymount opens San Pedro campus

San Pedro leaders on Wednesday called the port-side, working-class community something it has never before been called - a "college town."

Marymount College celebrated the opening of its Waterfront Campus with tours of its new classrooms, conference rooms and offices on the first floor of the 11-story Pacific Place office building. The floor was most recently occupied by Northrop Grumman offices.

San Pedro leaders heralded the campus arrival as evidence that the city is on the upswing.
"It doesn't get any better than being a college town," said San Pedro Chamber of Commerce President Betsy Cheek.

Peter Rothe, cofounder of San Pedro Arts & Academic Alliance, acknowledged the community's blue-collar roots and its struggle to enhance the downtown area. read full Daily Breeze article

Marymount Officially Arrives in San Pedro’s Historic Downtown District

Marymount College’s heart and soul ceremoniously merged with that of San Pedro with the grand opening of the Marymount College Waterfront Campus on Wednesday, January 11, 2012. In front of a crowd of nearly 300 people, the College’s first new campus in decades was formally opened and celebrated by national and local leaders, members of Marymount’s board of trustees, and a variety of key community supporters. Congresswoman Janice Hahn and Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa each offered their congratulations along with the presentation of formal seals of recognition at the 222 W. Sixth Street location. Marymount’s president, Dr. Michael Brophy, thanked faculty, staff and students for their patience with this phase of expansion and singled out the San Pedro Chamber of Commerce, the San Pedro Historic Waterfront Business Improvement District (PBID) and the San Pedro Arts & Academic Alliance for their key roles in developing the new downtown campus.

“The beginning of the Waterfront Campus is one of the most significant things to happen to San Pedro in a long time,” said Chuck Klaus, benefactor to the College. “To have Marymount College in downtown San Pedro is a win-win situation. The students get a diversity of experience here as well.” The Marylyn and Chuck Klaus Center for the Arts at 430 W. Sixth Street is scheduled to open in August 2012. With these two locations on Sixth Street, as well as the Arcade Gallery and partnerships with the Warner Grand Theatre and the Grand Annex, Marymount’s downtown campus will be the “anchor tenant” to San Pedro, said Stephen Robbins, executive director of the PBID.

Reverend Mark Villano, the chaplain of Marymount College, offered an eloquent blessing with Marymount students reciting biblical readings. The crowd reigned in its excitement for these moments of poignant reflection. Dr. Brophy reiterated the importance of continuing Marymount’s mission of service in tandem with the exciting turn of events, which began with its four-year accreditation in 2010. Mentioning Marymount’s service learning program and the 25,000 service hours students have dedicated over two years to organizations such as the San Pedro Boys & Girls Club, Brophy added that “students get to learn what it means to be human by serving others.”

While today was the formal dedication, since August the latest in classroom technology has been implemented by upper division classes at the Waterfront Campus. Administrative offices have also been buzzing with activity in what was formerly the Northrup Grumman building in the heart of the San Pedro’s Historic Waterfront District. “We have reached new heights in our mission,” said Brophy. “This last year has been the most exhilarating!”

“Opening Marymount’s Waterfront Campus has become a major benefit to Marymount, San Pedro and the greater Los Angeles area,” said Burt Arnold, president of the Marymount’s board of trustees. “We are proud to have Mayor Villaraigosa’s and Congresswoman Hahn’s support.” View Slideshow of Event

Thanks to the generosity of the Meid and McFarlane Foundation, every Spring we are honored to have guest speaker visit our campus. The lecturers reflect our mission as a liberal arts college, representing a variety of disciplines.  Guest speakers visit with students, faculty and staff.  The program culminates with a public lecture on the last evening.

Opportunity International

Peter Thorrington, who is a member of the board of directors for Opportunity International, presents the 2012 Meid Visiting Mentor Lecture. Mr. Thorrington will discuss his important work at Opportunity International, which is a microfinance service organization that provides small business loans, savings, insurance and training to more than two million people working their way out of poverty in the developing world. Opportunity International was the first organization to approach microfinance using a microfinance network.  The global Opportunity International Network serves clients in more than 20 countries and works with fundraising partners in the United States, Australia, Canada, Germany and the United Kingdom.
