KNBC Viewers Grant Christmas Scholarships to Students

Three Marymount College students were recently awarded the “NBC 4 Beating the Odds” scholarship. Every year NBC 4, in partnership with the Fulfillment Fund and the California Community Foundation, award scholarships to college students who have weathered numerous obstacles in their lives to get higher education.  They also receive a behind the scenes look at the NBC newsroom and studios. This year seven students were selected, three of whom are Marymount students: Jovana Smith, Daniel Gutierrez Medina, and Jose Carrera.

We are looking to provide a business incubator for Marymount Students, Staff & Faculty to be able to come and develop any entrepreneurial venture they would like to create, says Grimshaw.

We plan on running this in room C203 on Mondays after 4pm starting in the Spring 2011 semester.  We will provide coaching, mentoring, development, feasibility, business plans, how to's on marketing, financing, structure, etc for early stage business ideas...there will be no charge and I will be the advisor and faculty working with entrepreneurs and my students.

This is exciting and we are looking forward to helping Marymount create some phenomenal businesses.

Marymount Alumnus Gives Keynote Address

Marymount alumnus Christian Alvarado gave an inspiring keynote address to the more than 400 guests attending The Fulfillment Fund’s Stars 2010 benefit gala in October at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

The Fulfillment’s Fund’s mission is to help economically disadvantaged students graduate from high school, earn a college-degree and become productive members of society. To achieve this, the Fund works with students in under-resourced Los Angeles high schools and then provides financial aid and continued mentoring throughout the college years. Christian was the first Fulfillment Fund student enrolled at Marymount. Today, many students from the Fulfillment Fund are attending classes and are pursuing both two-year and four-year degrees at the College.

Christian has faced many challenges in his life, including blindness, poverty, losing his brother to murder and overcoming academic roadblocks. With the help of the Fulfillment Fund, his mentor and Marymount College, he has excelled and will be graduating with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Santa Cruz in the spring of 2011. Next, Christian plans to attend graduate school and is considering a career in school administration.

Marymount Professor Exhibits Her Work in U.S. and Internationally

Professor Jennifer Vanderpool’s exhibition “Sagoberättelser” (Fairy Tales) was recently on view at the Designarkivet in Nybro, Sweden.  She was honored with an International Cultural Grant from the Swedish Arts Council.  This juried Award, bestowed upon cultural practitioners for artistic excellence furthers a progressive cultural agenda to support and encourage intercultural exchange and cooperation around the world. 

 
Jennifer Vanderpool works with experimental film, video, animation, and sound, in her indoor and outdoor installations.  She has exhibited at museums and galleries in the U.S., Mexico, Hungary, Denmark, Sweden, and Norway and awarded grants from the Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs, Danish Arts Council, Swedish Arts Council, as well as project funding from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. Her work has been written about in The New York Times, Sculpture, Art Papers, Artweek, Art ltd., Angeleno, Atlanta Journal Constitution, The Houston Chronicle, Kansas City Star, Tulsa World, Dagens Nyheter, Politiken, and El Universal, as well as numerous other national and international newspapers and magazines. Vanderpool holds an Independent, Interdisciplinary Ph.D. in Art Critical Practices from the University of California Regents and a MFA from the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Marymount College Soccer Banquet

Marymount Soccer Teams celebrated the end of the season with a banquet at the Los Verdes Golf Club on Nov. 19th. Families, staff, coaches and the players had a great meal and celebrated the inaugural NAIA season. The coach, Ben Graham handed out awards and thanked the staff, families and the players for making this a memorable season. Below is our award winners, if you see them on campus make sure you congratulate them on their hard work and dedication.

Marymount Student Leaders attend NACA Conference

Last weekend, I took four energetic leaders from Marymount to the NACA Conference in Ontario, CA.  Gavin Todd, Jesus Rodriguez, Jennifer Rosales, and Marily Lara couldn’t have represented Marymount College any better! They were eager participants in activities, attended educational sessions that excited them to start programs on campus, and treated each other and other students with respect and kindness.

Marymount College Theatre presents "Almost, Maine" November 18-20th

Marymount College Theater students will perform John Cariani’s highly acclaimed play Almost, Maine. On a cold, clear, moonless night in the middle of winter, all is not quite what it seems in the remote, mythical town of Almost, Maine. Residents find themselves falling in and out of love in unexpected and often hilarious ways.

Geo Trippin'

Geo Trippin’... no it’s not the latest dance move... it’s not the newest model small car… it is a geography class... a three-day... on the road, geography class to be specific! This field study 1 unit course is taught by Marymount’s Assistant Professor of Geography, Sharon Johnson.


GEO 108 is a three day lab offered to students who opt for hands-on learning in the field that supplements what students are learning in classroom lectures. It’s geography “by the boot” not just “by the book”. The class/road trip consists of a caravan of students, volunteer drivers, Sharon and lots of maps, snacks, and walkie-talkie jokes.


The trip includes visits to the Owens and Death Valleys, the Sierra Nevada and San Gabriel Mountains and more than twenty stops in between. All in three days!


Sharon has been hosting these labs for 20 years and each year she perfects the trip even more. Students are so fascinated by the trips that many of them come back and volunteer year after year. Students not only get to see some of the most extreme conditions in California first hand, they get both geography and history lessons along the way including a stop at the WWII Manzanar Relocation Camp. GEO 108 gives students a creative and innovative reason to like learning again!

Freshman Student Honored for her Volunteerism

On November 4, the Daily Breeze newspaper presented its first Women of Distinction Awards. After receiving more than 160 nominations, the Daily Breeze and a panel of community leaders narrowed the field to 33 finalists in 11 categories. Marymount College freshman, Erica Fine, was selected as a finalist in the category of Young Woman of the Year.


Erica has spent more than 1,200 hours doing volunteer work while enrolled at Palos Verdes High School. Now a student at Marymount, she is involved in Marymount Opportunities for Volunteer Experience and is serving at the Boys & Girls Club of the Los Angeles Harbor helping after-school students with homework, play activities and sports. “I like to spend my time wisely, rather than doing something like watching TV. That doesn’t really help anyone. I mean it’s fine, but I like to see what my time benefits and what I can do with that time,” says Fine.

Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society welcomes new members.

On Tuesday, November 9, the Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society welcomed seven new members into its Marymount Chapter, Alpha Omega Kappa.  The College would like to congratulate the following new members: Joshua Arakaki, Bianaca DiGuiseppe, Brianna Duggan, Clay Scheffey, Michael Spittel, Sandy Yang, Serena Yniguez.



One Campus, One Book Discussion

The Marymount College Community participates in "One College, One Book" which is a program that promotes the student body to all read the same book. This semester the book chosen is Planet Walker: 22 Years of Walking. 17 Years of Silence by John Francis. The college then holds a discussion open to all students to discuss different aspects of the book. It's a great way to collaborate with others and gain insight into different perspectives of the book.



Marymount students volunteer with Operation Teddy Bear

On Saturday, November 6th, 2010, a group of Marymount students went to the Volunteer Center in Torrance to participate in Operation Teddy Bear.  While there, they packed books and school supplies in backpacks for underprivileged first graders in our area.
