Marymount College Announces $2 Million Gift Largest Donation from an Individual in College’s History

The Marymount College Board of Trustees and President Michael S. Brophy announce the largest donation, a $2 million gift, from an individual to the college in its 79-year history. The donor, wishing to be anonymous, previously gave $1 million in 2009 to benefit the college’s Learning Center in the future William H. Hannon Library.

“This cumulative gift of $3 million to the Building Futures campaign means so much to the college, says Dr. Brophy. “Our generous donor is also inspiring others to give to our campaign and help us to realize our goal to provide a modern campus for our students.”

With many of the college’s original utilities in service since 1951, the college’s modernization needs are apparent and this donation will bring much needed improvements to the campus’ infrastructure, as well as add parking to the campus.

“At Marymount College we are commitment to providing our students a high quality education and our campus master plan is designed to provide facilities our students need to excel academically,” says Dr. Brophy.

In 2010, the college received accreditation by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges Accrediting Commission for Senior Colleges and Universities for baccalaureate programs in Business, Media Studies and Liberal Arts.

After many years of seeking city approval for the college’s master plan, the City of Rancho Palos Verdes approved entitlements for the college’s development. The first step in the college’s master plan includes prepping the campus for its second phase of construction while improving the college’s utilities such as power, telecommunications and plumbing. Next in the campus’s modernization plan is the construction of a new library – the William H. Hannon Library – which will provide advanced academic technology and educational resources required by today’s student.

“We are honored to receive this gift which continues the momentum of the exciting changes occurring at our campus, says Brophy. “This donation is emblematic of the many successes the college has experienced recently.”

Marymount College also offers one of the most idyllic collegiate locales available. Situated along the picturesque coastline of Rancho Palos Verdes, Marymount College is a student-centered, culturally rich, Catholic learning environment for students of all faiths who seek to transform their lives and achieve their academic, professional and life goals.

Red Cross Blood Drive

Marymount and MOVE continue their support by holding an annual blood drive as an opportunity for students to stop in and donate blood. Upon donating, they are given a cool shirt that shows their dedication to the cause. We collected 54 pints and we would like to thank the many staff and students for stopping by and donating.

Warner Grand Theatre Embarks on New Venture with Marymount

On January 26, a five-month lease went into effect between Marymount College in Rancho Palos Verdes and Jerico Development, the property owners of 434 W. 6th Street, San Pedro, where the Grand Vision Foundation is located.

Marymount College is offering its students classes in music theory, jazz ensemble, drama and set design at the Grand Annex, a space for live music entertainment and other performances. A portion of Marymount’s lease payment is designated to further the work of the Grand Vision Foundation, whose mission is to "preserve and promote the historic Warner Grand Theatre and foster arts, cultural and educational activities in San Pedro and the Harbor/Peninsula area of Los Angeles.”

In addition, Marymount is renting the Warner Grand Theatre from the City of Los Angeles for three weeks in the spring for rehearsals and performances of its theater production, You Can’t Take It With You. The play will run April 28–30th.  read more...

English adjunct publishes a novel

Regina O’Melveny, who has been a long-time adjunct in our English program, has had a novel accepted for publication by Little, Brown and Company.

The novel is a work of historical literary fiction entitled, The Book of Madness and Cures.

It’s the story of a Renaissance woman doctor who compiles a Book of Cures as she, along with two companions, search for her father who has disappeared somewhere in Europe while compiling his own medica material.

The book is due out April 2012. As of right now foreign rights have been sold to Russia, Italy, Holland and Brazil.

Global Connections Talk

Jenny Goldstein  is our March Global Connections speaker.  Ms. Goldstein is a Geographer, completing her dissertation at UCLA.  She is interested in food and agricultural systems and their impact on trade globalization, economic development, the environment and social justice. She has conducted research on coffee tasters in Rwanda and is currently researching produce distributors in downtown Los Angeles.

Her talk, “Who Decides What Tastes Good? The Invisible Middlemen in Global Food Commodity Networks”  will be held on Thursday, March 31^st at 4:00pm in CEC-116.  All are welcome! 

Meid Mentor - The Future of Peace in the Middle East

Professor Yossi Mekelberg presents the 2011 Meid Visiting Mentor Lecture. Prof. Mekelberg leads the International Relations department at Webster University, Regent's College in London. He is also the associate fellow of the Middle East Programme at the Royal Institute of International Affairs, Chatham House, London. Prof. Mekelberg is a regular contributor to the international media on issues including international politics in the Middle East, the Arab-Israeli peace process and the implications of the war in Iraq for the region.

Walk in Application Day

Walk-In Application Day on March 18, 2011 from 9:00am, - 6:00pm is your opportunity to have your $40 application fee waived, meet with an Admission counselor and leave with an admission decision that day. During your visit, you can also tour the campus, meet with a financial aid counselor and speak with current Marymount students. Appointments are encouraged but not needed.


What should you bring?
For an admisson decision, you must provide the following credentials:

• Completed application for admission
• Official high school transcript
• Official college transcripts (if applicable)

Marymount helps restore and preserve natural habitat!

A big thanks to all those who volunteered yesterday at the White Point Nature Preserve!  Weeding and sorting seeds may not seem like world-changing tasks, but just as delivering a college education requires all sorts of different efforts in combination, so does restoring habitat.  The faculty and staff combined efforts in supporting our students at Marymount and results in significant benefits for the students, and our work. In restoring habitat at White Point benefits both the creatures that can now inhabit the site, and the many people who enjoy it.

In a world becoming increasingly homogenized, it's important for us to value what is unique in each or our students, and in ourselves.  By the same token, we should value what is unique in the world around us.  For those who are interested, the attached document provides a brief overview of the factors that have made White Point and the Palos Verdes Peninsula a special place.

Marymount Student Competing in Miss California USA 2012

Marymount Junior Jennifer Hercules was born in Huntington Park and now resides in South Gate, California.  She is very proud to have the opportunity to represent the City of South Gate for Miss California USA 2012.  She has had the opportunity to volunteer all around the Los Angeles County for the Los Angeles Food Bank, Reading to Kids, several campus-sponsored blood drives and various other charitable organizations.  She is excited to start this new year by volunteering with both new non-profit organizations and organizations she has worked with in the past.  One of her main passions in her life is school; Jennifer graduated from Huntington Park High School and attended Marymount College. She earned an Associate Degree in Psychology and is now pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and Business at Marymount College.  Her long-term goal is to open her own psychiatric office and an American/Salvadorian Restaurant....Read More..
